Microsoft is clearly looking to gain branding recognition with the Vista startup sound, much as Apple did all the way back in 1984. However, this is also true of other platforms (think of the Macintosh with its distinctive CHONG boot noise). So does this finally end the great Vista startup sound drama? Some users may still object to the fact that Vista, unlike versions of Windows dating back to release 3.1, does not allow an easy way to change the startup sound to something else. "You said you wanted to have the opportunity to mute it if and when you felt it necessary."

"We heard you loud and clear when it came to discussing our plans to include a default start-up sound that plays as you boot-up Windows Vista," he wrote on his blog. Vista product manager and Nick White explained: Now, in a more recent (5728) build of Vista, the ability has now appeared to turn off the startup sound in the Control Panel. Instead, the concern was that Windows would not allow an easy way to change or disable this startup sound.Īt the time, the "controversy" seemed somewhat overblown, as Microsoft had officially stated that they had not yet decided whether or not to make the startup sound optional. The uproar wasn't so much over the sound itself (which hasn't yet been finalized, although guitarist Robert Fripp is apparently working on it). Early this month, Ars reported on the heated debate over Windows Vista's new startup sound.
